The World of Fly Fishing is designed for aspiring and veteran fly fishers alike. This eight hour course reveals the all secrets of fly fishing, from setting up your equipment and identifying aquatic insects to casting the fly to a hungry fish!! The essential knowledge and skills of fly fishing in one day! Together in classroom and on the lawn sessions you will: 1) learn about and examine the essential equipment; 2) practice tying two essential knots; 3) identify aquatic insects and understand their lifecycles; 4) understand the differences in fly imitations, and how to select one; and 5) practice the secrets of fly casting and line control.
The World of Fly Fishing provides you with enough information to purchase the right equipment and enough basic skills to get on the stream! The next course in this series is 103 On-stream Fly Fishing Strategies, designed to introduce you to the practical side of fly fishing, on the water, in real fishing situations.
On-stream Fly Fishing Strategies is for anglers that have taken the introductory class 102, have equipment, and have spent some time practicing knots and casting. To get the most out of the class, students should know how to tie knots to add tippet and attach the fly and be able to make a pick up and lay down cast, false cast and roll cast. It is best to practice for a couple weeks after taking 102 The World of Fly Fishing. Students must bring wading gear and a PA fishing license. This course is a practicum that will show you how to apply your new knowledge and skill in real fishing situations.
Together we’ll wade into one of the many trout streams in the area and; 1) reveal the secrets of dry, wet and nymph fishing strategies; 2) discuss when to use each strategy; 3) decide what fly to use; 4) learn to construct leaders; 5) learn how to approach the stream; 6) understand how to “read the water” and determine where fish might live; and 7) practice casting and “mending” the fly line to achieve the desired presentation. Of course what better rewards for good technique than a beautifully speckled trout making the rod dance in your hand!
Of all fly fishing strategies, day in and day out, nymph fishing is one of the most deadly and effective. Many find it perplexing. "What is the secret to nymph fishing?" they ask. Students will study nymph fishing in depth, from use of different methods and leader designs, to casting and line control techniques that have been proven effective. Students will spend plenty of time on the water with the coaches, reading water, casting and practicing techniques such as Shot and Indicator, European and High Stick nymphing. What better reward for good technique than a fish making the rod dance in your hand!
